Urinary incontinence affects over twelve million American adults. There are different causes for different kinds of urinary incontinence. Stress incontinence, caused by coughing, sneezing, or laughing affects women more so than men. Overactive bladder, caused by spasms of the urinary muscles leading to an urgency to urinate, effects both men and women.
The main thing to remember is you're not alone. Although it's a personal, private problem, there are things you can do to make living with incontinence easier. Stock up on quality pads made for incontinence. Menstrual pads are not the same, and do not work as well. Practice Kegel exercises. Men can do them too. Kegel exercises help to strengthen the muscles used to stop the flow of urine. Another good tip: don't wear light colored clothing that may show stains easier. Black is timeless and doesn't show fluid as easily.
For night time security, one might consider using adult diapers. Although the thought might not be too appealing, the peace of mind is worth it. Some things just can't be avoided, and if wearing them means a good night's sleep, then you have to do, what you have to do.
You don't have to be embarrassed by incontinence. It's a common problem as we grow older, and knowing that there are ways to help prevent embarrassing accidents makes life a whole lot easier. Do your research. Talk to your doctor. You don't have to suffer alone.
