I love the birds. I have feeders all over my yard. I could sit and watch them coming and going, feeding and flying, all day long. I especially like the hummingbirds that frequent my feeders. For such small birds, they sure can eat a lot!
Instead of buying the hummingbird nectar from the store, I make my own. This recipe works for the orioles too, just put it in an oriole feeder. The hummingbirds love it, and it saves me tons of money since I refill their feeders at least twice a week!
Hummingbird Nectar Recipe
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup water.
Boil water. Remove from heat and add sugar. Stir until dissolved completely. Let cool, then fill feeders.
The average store bought feeder will hold approximately two cups of nectar. You can make extra and store it in the refrigerator for up to a week. Since there are no preservatives in this recipe, you should empty any remaining food from the feeders once a week and clean the feeders, then refill.
Do not add food coloring.
