When deciding how to arrange your living room, an easy way to start is to find a focal point and build the rest of the living room around it. Think as the focal point as an anchor to the room and place everything else in front of this important design element.
1. Any large piece of furniture, a fireplace, or a large window can serve as a focal point. Build your furniture design around it. Move other pieces of furniture away from the wall to create intimate conversation areas.
2. Place chairs no more than eight feet apart to encourage conversation.
3. Place a table beside every seating possible. Adding a lamp beside every seating is a good idea, too.
4. Place a coffee table at least fourteen to eighteen inches away from the sofa to allow for ample legroom.
5. Use side tables that are as high as the arm of the chair or sofa they are next to.
6. Walkways should be at least eighteen inches wide to allow for ease of movement through the room.
